Blog #7 Theater and INT 95 events

The theater presentation was very interesting and informative for people who would like to be enrolled in the theater program here or even just do some sort of theater work. I definitely thought that he was most likely the best speaker in talent wise. He really made me stay awake with the way he changed his voice and the way he moved around I was just very impressed with the way he was able to keep everybody's attention. As I looked around I saw excitement in the eyes of the students and even I was somewhat excited. I also kind of want to try one of those one credit plays as an actor maybe a world war two play because I find world war two very interesting. On a different topic I would like to take some time to talk about some of the INT 95 events I attended. The first event I attended was a career resource presentation in the formal lounge. The main thing I learned here was if I want to get hired here I should put down work study program. Second event I attended was the Wednesday faculty lunch when the engineers where there. Here I talked to professor Gallucci and talked to him why the economics curve was so hard and if he would bring in some Economics professors so I would be able to determine the best route for me. Overall all the events were very interesting and informative, I really felt i got the most out of the class.

Macbeth

I attended the Macbeth play on Friday night, which was opening night with no opinion or knowledge of how the play would turn out to be. With an open mind I walked in the door and picked up the play pamphlet which I ended up giving to the girl sitting next to me and never got back. I hate to give a poor review but unfortunately the play did not impress me to the point that it was hyped up to be. First the costume design was terrible, I know they were going for an approach that would make it seem as the characters could put down there masks and become objects however, this was not the right way to do it. Second if you have no prior knowledge of the play it would be very difficult to tell which characters are which because of the costume choice, minus Macbeth and his wife, and the King. Unfortunately the costume design left me with a sense that the acting was mediocre. Because there was such a big point of the assimilation and alikeness of the characters it was truly difficult to admire the acting of one character and really see the character on his or her own. This stated it was something new and I have never seen a play performed like this which made it interesting and made me want to see it played out till the end just incase the director had something interesting up his sleeve. Overall to appreciate this play you needed to be a master of the novel and truly understand every single character dynamic which will then allow for you to focus on the true essence of the acting and style.

Week 5

I really enjoyed the presentation that the dean gave. I was really happy he said that critical thinkers come to universities to think but he did not sugar cot it that sometimes you need to just go with the flow and not piss people off by thinking critically all the time. However I feel he should have kept his political opinions to himself especially if he is saying he wants to take away everybody’s second amendment right to bear arms. Then he started to go into another topic that a strongly disagree with and that is religion and saying that Jesus was just a “wonder bright dude, challenging fate”. I understand we are supposed to let go of some of our “most cherished ideas” but religion is a very important part of many people’s lives and making these statements in a speech is sickening to me. In fact religion has saved my life and given me sanity when I needed it most so I was angered with his debauchery of my religion. Other than that I was happy to hear about the sunset cruise that was going to take place and I think that would be a very cool and interesting experience to par take in with a date. Unfortunately I was not able to go to the library visit because I was home with my parents. I ate some great home cooked food and was just happy to be able to be back home in a nice calm environment.

Blog 4 (Plagarism)

All I can really say is wow. I did not know about %75 of what plagiarism was and all the multiple forms that it has. I was very surprised that in my High School we did not have a plagiarism course for seniors that were going to attend college. That would have been very useful because as the article states almost everybody uses somebodies ideas. I am very happy that I read both articles because without them I would have most likely committed plagiarism in every single one of my papers because I would have not cited sources that i paraphrased from. I was also really happy to see that if a professor accuses you of plagiarism and you have notes and drafts to prove that you did not plagiarize then you can defend yourself and it is not automatically counted as plagiarism. I thought there were also numerous goo tips on how to avoid plagiarism in the second article. The main and overarching tip was to make sure that you site your sources.  I find that to be the most important because if your sources are not cited and you paraphrase just one persons specific sentence then you are committing plagiarism. In my opinion I feel the university should create a website that allows students to submit their papers and then the website would act as the professor and check for plagiarism in the paper. Therefore students will know before hand whether or not they missed a citation or if they just plainly plagiarized. 

3rd Blog (Lecture and career counseling visit.)

I was really impressed with all the knowledge the librarian had to offer to us at her lecture. I went in with the mindset that the library is dull and boring and this lecture really changed that. I was interested in her theory that a great school equals a great library and I loved how passionate she was about the library. I also agree with her theory that great students and scholars alike need to find balance in their lives, with studying and recreational activities. I have seen myself do best when I am well balanced with sports and studying so when fall quarter begins I will definitely join Intramural Table Tennis and Basketball. Along with some great advice she also offered us some great resources such as the library portal allowing us access to numerous resources from other UC campuses. In regards to career counseling I was happy to hear that they have an accounting association and resources on how to do interviews which are both very important in my field. In addition to those two items I was also very pleased with the fact that they have a career fair occurring on September the 24th where I can learn more about my major as well as the accounting association. However the best part of the career counseling visit was hearing that the top four accounting recruiting agencies visit this school looking to hire students. I love accounting and being able to get a good job at a top accounting firm would make my parents so proud of me and hopefully they will buy me a new motorcycle.

Big Chilling in UCSB (2nd Blog)

I will start of my blog with saying hello and with the Majors and Minors fair I attended. I directly headed over to my major, Economics and Accounting, and I was hit ferociously with some very harsh information to take in. I heard the lady say the classes were some of the toughest on campus! Only %6 of the class can get an A in the pre major courses because of the department curve. I quickly asked her to point me in the best path to take the classes, when the level of competition is the lowest and where she thought I could thrive. I was happy to get a personally recommended schedule for the first two years of my career. I also checked out the study abroad in Singapore and China because I am interested in business I figured those are two very thriving economies and most business is done in the Asian countries now.  I have to say the majors and minors fair was also a good way to meet people. It was like a busy train station with multiple people scurrying around. I was able to meet some other Econ and Accounting majors which I thought could be very useful in the future to form a study group and really succeed in making it into the major. I exchanged a couple phone numbers and exited accordingly.
The Student Resource Building was is probably the most resourceful tool on campus. Here you can get information about EOP, and CLAS. I was happy to find that in this building there were smart boards instead of whiteboards and projectors. I was also happy to see that they offer CLAS for Econ which I will be consistently attending in order to gain an advantage over the other students. Now that is what I call being resourceful. Overall I feel that the Student Resource Building really is the focal point when trying to be resourceful. Multiple departments are located inside of it which makes it very convenient for students.

INT 95 First Blog Post

 Greetings, I am Chris Jung and I am from Idar-Oberstein, Germany. I moved over here when I was 10 years old and lived in Redwood Shores, California since then. I enjoy playing basketball, accounting, and the car brand BMW. I played basketball from sixth grade till the end of High school. I miss playing basketball because I miss the closeness of being on a team and everybody working towards one common goal. I would say that I am a team player in mostly everything and if it is possible I am always looking for the best interest of the unit rather than just myself. I love money and everything to do with it. It amazes me how a piece a paper manages to control most people's lives so perhaps that is why I enjoy accounting and money in general. My love for BMW stems from my experience of driving my car, washing my car, and just spending time with my car. I can honestly say that driving anything other than my BMW has been a disappointment in both performance and sensation. I would like to add that I do enjoy other motor sports like dirt biking, and ATV's. Mainly its the sound of the engine revving that attracts me to compete in these sports but I have to add that knowing you can die at any second makes the sport a lot more intense and for me that is exciting. In essence I enjoy the unpredictability that motor sports bring. 

 

 As a student I am interested in Economics and accounting for multiple reasons. I enjoy the Economics side because it allows me to have a better understanding of how rational people act and why they act in that way. I also enjoy all the Economic laws because they often apply to numerous areas instead of just one field of study. I enjoy the accounting aspect of the major because it will allow for me to examine a business and determine it's worth  as well as if that business has room for growth. An account is safe secure and grounded and in the financial aspect of my life I enjoy those qualities. I hope to learn more about myself on this journey in addition to my studies and hopefully enjoy every day of my life.
